Medium: graphite + watercolor. The paper was alright for watercolor, but not the best. I seriously need to get some actual watercolor paper. :<

This was more experimenting with water color than anything else. I'm extremely satisfied with how Dorian (the blonde) turned out but not so hot on Klaus (the other one). I got too caught up in the details again. ><;

Work scanner was more crappy than I could ever imagine, so I had to take a picture. Arg, true colors, where have you gone? ;;

More Eroica fanart. Or rather, old Eroica fanart I finally finished cleaning up. Mostly for may_onaka because homg thank you for partaking in Eroica with me! ♥

Medium: Ink and paper (with minimal photoshop edits).

This is me trying out a very different style than my usual manga one. The picture style is based heavily off of Aubrey Beardsley's, an Art Nouveau artist of the late 1800s.

Originally, I was trying out this style for a submission into bb_shousetsu but in the middle of that, I got hooked and Eroica and well, what better personage of Art Nouveau decadence and aesthetism than Dorian Red Gloria? XD

Currently, I'm trying to ~~stab~~ work my way through a companion picture of Klaus, but the Major's so unsuited to all this detail faggotry that it's not working so far. D:

New manga and a new pen to art with. I bought one of those old school ~~metal nib pens (I'm so lame, I don't know the technical term for it)~~ fountain pens (thank you Max!) and it works like a dream. Too bad school scanner looks and works like it's 20 years old.

Speaking of old school, I recently got into this long, hilarious, old school, amazing manga called "From Eroica with Love." Rampantly gay English art thief hates then falls in love with angry gun-totting NATO Major. Sounds ideal, right? Except it's surprisingly PG13. This is old school, afterall. Blue balls are part of the equation. :<

I saw this while I was in Japan and made a huge "D:" there. I feel ridiculously elitist for saying this, but this is the image I /never/ want to project.

Redeemingly, some of the people don't seem so bad, but the ones they focus on in the show are by far represent the worst in American anime fan-culture. It makes me think that these people have no idea of proper conduct/behavior. Yugioh-chick + singing-otaku-man = DEE COLON.

Fanime Con Report Time!

I realize this is terribly late but camera broke and I had to send it in for repairs... T^T But I still wanted to post this so apologies in advance!

Warning: Long but with pictures! :D

So, first time at a large con and I was a little scared. It's a lot bigger, and there's much more wandering space, but I guess I was expecting to be blown away by the amazement of it all. I hear that AX is 2-3 times bigger but overall, I wasn't too shocked at Fanime.

Thursday: So much driving. Too much driving. Consider flying next time.
Best Part of Day: Finding out that dustyjack, jadeprince and xian_pu's room was two doors away. They're all so keen and it was really fun to hang out (even if they only knew me (infamously) as Jello-boob~ XD)

Friday:
Costumes: Chihiro (Spirited Away)

Wasn't overall impressed with the amount of people at the artist alley. Sold a bunch of dustballs. Cosplayed Chihiro from Spirited Away with envies as my Haku. No one seemed to know who I was though and I felt a bit alienated when they just wanted a picture of Haku and motioned me (apparently, a random Dead or Alive Secret Character) to get out of the way. Worked on sunako's Shadow of the Colossus cosplay all night long and slept at 7:30am. Finally finished with the iron-on work to get 3 hours of sleep.

Best Part of Day: Hanging out with everyone and chatting. Dinner with a huge group was a pain but it was awesome to bump into Vlad again, and meet his friends. Evan (Hughes) was hilarious~ Yay Elisha-chan! Your daddy loves you enough to work as a Catboy to put you through college! X3

Saturday:
Costumes: Nami (One Piece), Dead Chick (Shadow of the Colossus)

Work up, downed more caffine to go to the One Piece gathering as Nami. Was disappointed in both Sanjis at the shoot --none of them seemed in character to yell a "Nami-swaaaaaaan~~" but then again, jadeprince is just so brilliant as Sanji that maybe my Nami gets spoiled. Had hot Califa x Nami sudzy fun with mystie and ended the photoshoot on a happy note. The bubble maker attached to the Clima Tact didn't work as well as it should have and it was slightly sad.

(There were more pictures but my camera died... ;;)

Best Part of Day: Doing the photoshoot with Andy (who's such an amazing photographer) with sunako in the Wanderer and me in the Dead Chick. The pictures came out beautifully, although I wish I put more effort into my end of the costume. (I just threw on a pretty white dress and combed out my hair...) Maybe a wig would have been nice. Really really glad that sunako liked her costume in the end, although I'm sure she'll have ironed out all the problems in time for AX.

(Here, you can see that the Wanderer actually has pretty pink toenails! XD)
Also, going out and hanging with sunako and jibureal at the bar was pretty awesome. Tiger Paws are so yummy and the bartenders and everyone we met were so nice~ It was great to get away from the con for a while and just relax.

Sunday:
Costumes: Walter C. Dollneazz (Hellsing)

Dressed in Walter, which is probably the most comfortable outfit ever. The wig was so cute, and it's all thanks to sunako for styling it~! Walked around for a little bit and actually met up with a cousin of my boyfriend. She was a really nice, cute girl, and so I talked with her, her mom, and her dad and took pictures. She was cosplaying Misato and she had the best Penpen in the world~!

Masquerade had a majority of bad skits, but there were a few bright, shining gems. The winning AMVs were all pretty amazing~ I highly recommend "Montage" as it's hilarious. Also met up with muralasa who was super nice~ Congrats on iPlay for their cute, winning skit! :D

Best Part of Day: Getting a Voodoo Doll from sunako. <3
Kanru coming back after 3 hours of hentai to tell us about "hand checks," in which every few episodes, a flashlight would be waved around and everyone was required to hold up both hands. Naughty boys shouldn't wank in a room packed with people. XD HAND CHECK!

Monday: Packed up, got ready to leave, bought merchandise, left.

Best Part of Day: Trying Marimo Tea with mystie, dustyjack, jadeprince, and xianpu who all were very brave about it. Marimo=Zoro is the traditional One Piece Joke, so naturally, I wanted to try this crazy Japanese stuff with OP fans~ To me, it just tasted like weak seaweed soup, but everyone else agreed that it was pond/tidepool/seawater-ish. I didn't think it was so bad, but many people did~ Props to jadeprince for licking the Marimo!! X3

Everything has kind of been going downhill lately. One of the biggest kickers this month was not getting the Freeman Grant to go to Tokyo for thesis research. That and having less than decent room draw numbers, which means a big chance for a less than decent room next year, even as a senior. On top of that, there's all this stuff about no longer having a thesis topic and what I'm going to do with my life afterwards. I've met so many great people in California and really want to stay here, but I'm totally on the fence if I want to live by myself yet. Plus, graduation just scares the crap out of me.

But, mytsie took me out a few days ago and I bought COPIC MARKERS~! XD I got 12 shiny ones, and they're absolutely gorgeous. So I spent a good few hours inking something for them to color. I've still gotta get used to the colors (and I think I need to buy another pinker flesh tone --an E53 maybe?) but I've tried them out on Natsuo and Yoji from Loveless!

I messed up seriously (and it shows) on Natsuo's face because I colored that first, but I'm just excited to be using these ridiculously expensive markers~ X3 I colored on tracing paper this time, but I can't wait to start experimenting on others~ >D

Q1: What's your HN(handle name)?
Mikarin Hikaru, usually mhikaru, but Hika to people who talk to me. :3

Q2: Why do you call yourself that?
Hikaru was the name my japanese teacher gave me in high school. Improper, but it's cute when shortened to Hika. Mikarin is a play off of "mikan" or "orange" which deals with my real name.

Q3: Do you use a Mac or a PC?
PC. Macs are cute, but so incompatible with everything. ;o;

Q4: What program do you use to do your pictures?
Photoshop 7, but I'm trying to transition into Deleter's ComicWorks.

Q5: Do you use a tablet or a mouse?
A (constantly breaking) tablet.

Q6: What colours do you use a lot?
This ugly puke green grey that I try to put on all my skin tones. It turns people into zombies. I'm good at drawing zombies.

Q7: What area of the pictures do you put most effort into?
The composition. It's the hardest to get right, even though I enjoy drawing the details more.

Q8: About how long does it take you do finish each picture?
Usually, from start to finish, at least a week because I pick it up and put it down so often.

I try to because I'm a pack-rat. *sweat*

Used to LOVE the watercolor function a little too much. I'm trying to cut back on that and do backgrounds by hand now...

I like only the music on, and terrible froofy classical music at that. >o<;

layout change!

It's been a while since I've had a layout change and I'm pretty sure people have gotten tired of Miyavi and all that blinding red + white.

This time, I tried to photoshop it up --and suceeded in overdoing it-- but, at least there are oranges~! It's pretty fun just photoshopping and messing around with real pictures. Hopefully, it's at least shiny?

Credit goes to murasaki_kaze and sunako for taking the pictures during our Goth-loli photoshoot a long loong time ago. Also, parts of the photoshop texture was taken from the wonderful talented people at icontemplation.

Fanart of Clavat (Milk) and Selkie (Honey) charactes from Crystal Chronicles! They're not really original per se since you don't really have that much choice on which one you pick, but they're so cute. In my mind, they frolic in rivers and lose shoes.

Wow, it's been a while since I posted. Come to think of it, the last one was while I was still in Japan... *sweat*

Went to ALA last weekend though and had half of a blast. Most things were pretty good --especially meeting so many cool people!-- but the con management was getting more annoying by the day.

Originally, I had three costumes planned for the convention but didn't have enough time to finish Hanataro from Bleach. It was kinda sad because I wanted to flounce around and be timid-cute but even without him, I still had fun~ :D

Friday: mytsie got us there in record time, as always, around 1 where we basically waited around and met people until the second car of our group got there to register into our hotel room. It was a lot wait, but we made friends with Vlad, the adorable Luffy who skipped around the con~ X3 When we got into our room, it was already way late so I changed into Water 7 Nami and enjoyed her skimpy mini-skirted costume out in the cold to Denny's. We then all made Vlad blush during dinner. XD

Rum party was really fun even though there was all this confusion about being a fire hazard and shuffling about for a while during the auction. It was just fun to be in One Piece and a pirate during it though! Arrrrr...?

Saturday: Went the morning as Nami again, this time with Log Pose and Clima Tact with the little birds sticking out of it. Fangirled so much over the other One Piece Cosplayers and had a fantastic photoshoot at the pool! Water + Luffy + Sanji = SO MUCH DROWNING LOVE. <3 Not to mention that Pell ate my birds.

Then changed into Rip Van Winkle from Hellsing during the afternoon. Con management started being asshats around then and there was this ridiculous thing about our Celas' and her Halconenn and how she looked too much like military personnel and it looked too much like real anti-aircraft machinery.... riiiiight-o.

The day was made up with hot hot Sirius/Remus photoshoot with estelofimladris and Jack-san~ Most of the pictuers were taken with someone else's camera (thank you Megumi!!) but the one that I did managed to fit into my itty bitty memory of my camera, I did fanart on~ X3 They're so pretty!! (*O*)/

Sunday: Was mostly cleaning up and wearing Rip somemore. My extensions were donated to a make Jack Sparrow backhair and I was lazy and didn't want to aquanet the little curl in Rip's hair. Still got Andy, you amazing photographer man you, to take some really pretty pictures though~ Thank you!

HIGHLIGHT OF THE POST: Great weekend filled to the brim with meeting wonderful people~ <3

Just came back from seeing the Full Metal Alchemist Movie. And I'm still basking in the afterglow.

It's so beautiful. <3

Plot is nice and it feels like, rather than a standalone movie, it's just a very long final episode of the series. Heck, Laruku even does an opening and ending song for it. X3

There was even a free gift with the purchase of the ticket (a hefty 1500yen ontop of the ridiculous 1.3hrs of transit to get to Yurakucho) and inside, there was SO MUCH Hagaren movie merchandise! I bought a folder and a key chain and took pictures wearing Al's cosplay coat and gloves (also for sale). So much fun! XD

Definitely worth a watch, especially if the last eps of the series left you grabby for more!! Hika encourages you all to pick it up on bittorrent or see it at a theatre near you! XD

Guess this came as a big shock to me, but things are really REALLY expensive in Japan. I've used so much money on transportation alone that I'm now afraid to go out. Suica go away so fast. So do bus cards.

Dear Japan,

Your every-3-minute-trains scare me. Do you think you could have it come every 6 minutes so I can save 50 yen? kthxbye.

So it's been a good week. A little bit of Yukata+Matsuri here (caught 6 goldfish with the net made out of toilet paper!), a happy few hours of karaoke there (so many songs!), and even 3 consequetive days of going to a Manga Cafe and completely overdosing myself on manga.

/Everything/ else in Japan is expensive, except the anime. It's everywhere and in copious amounts. If it didn't take me around 1000yen for transportation costs everytime I leave campus, I would be in Shinjuku everyday.

Speaking of expensive though, TENIMYU TICKETS ARE INSANE TO PURCHASE. A friend from the dorm went in early to a Lawson to buy them and they were already sold out. Looks like we're ebaying them off of people, but from what I've heard, it'll run about 5600 yen a person. Chance of a lifetime, I know --and ATOBE!!-- but still, my wallet hurts.

Future plans:

1) Mandarake- To find Suikoden doujinshi!
2) One Piece Museum in Odaiba- Ride a life-size Going Merry!
3) See Full Metal Alchemist Movie in Theaters- So expensive! ;;
4) Rent Advent Children when it comes out.

Japan is a marvel. Just so much things to do and see. But also costs SO MUCH MONEY. Owowow.

Okay. That was a very giddy fangirly post at 3:45 in the morning.

In more rational news: Felt a little wobble of a big earthquake aalll the way in Mitaka today. I think they said it was a 6. It was funny because everyone from Cali dived for doorframes while everyone else stood around going "huh? Did you feel that?"

But, if anyone wants me to look for something, I can try (time and/or money considering). :3
